Interns will have the opportunity to review our mentor directory to see which mentors they would like to be paired with and rank them. After matches are made, interns are welcome to start meeting with their mentor. We recommend a 1x weekly meeting throughout the summer. A mentor is a valuable resource that can be a sounding board in your career journey and help you navigate your new work environment. Past interns have had rewarding experiences with their mentors and benefited greatly from this whether it be personal or professional goals.
At a minimum, all interns will work onsite two days/week for activities with your internship cohort. Depending on your individual department, your summer may involve more on-site work. The two on-site days that are Internship Program-facilitated will be Tuesdays and Thursdays from 10 a.m. to noon in various locations on campus. Interns may also choose to reserve space on other days of the week, following the process listed on ITS Backstage (link to be shared at orientation). Please communicate with your supervisor regarding other expectations of on-site presence.
Locations of on-site cohort days will be communicated in advance. In the past, we have had programs in the Chemistry & Dow Willard H. Laboratory and the Undergraduate Science Building which is near the central bus stop. The Magic Bus, the University’s bus system, is available and routes can be viewed here. When on-site cohort days occur at locations other than these locations, the internship program planning team will communicate recommended parking areas and/or bus stops. Due to the hybrid nature of the program, our on-site locations are your primary work locations. ITS is not responsible for travel expenses, but we will do our best to support you with information and resources.
There are no plans to extend the program past the internship end date. That said, often interns remain working in their department part-time after the end of the program. Late July is a good time to begin talking to your supervisor about the possibility of converting to a student temporary employee.
The first two days of the internship will be your orientation to the program. Please wait for a more detailed email in the coming weeks regarding what to expect for orientation. You should soon receive a welcome email from your supervisor. Feel free to respond to that email and ask about any preparation you might want to do before the internship begins. If you have not received an email, please email [email protected] and we will connect you with your supervisor.
Interns are expected to work Monday to Friday for 40 hours per week. Once you begin reporting to your supervisor, you can determine what schedule works best for you and your team. Most staff in ITS work 8 a.m.–5 p.m. EST with an hour break for lunch. Your hours should not exceed 40 per week. You will be shown resources for time reporting during orientation. The university will observe two federal holidays during the internship program. The holidays are Memorial Day and Independence Day. ITS offices will be closed on those days and you will not work.
CPT applications are handled through the U-M International Center or the equivalent at your university if you are not a UM-Ann Arbor student. You must contact the International Center to initiate the process. They will provide you with specific instructions. When you reach a point where you need to have a detailed training description, we will work with you and your supervisor to generate it in the correct format so that it can be submitted with your application. Curricular Practical Training (CPT) for F-1 Students is a good place to begin.
Business casual attire is appropriate for interns. You will see a range of attire on ITS staff ranging from casual to business casual. Once you begin working, your supervisor can provide more guidance.
If you have not already, you will soon receive an introductory email from your supervisor. You will be interacting with your supervisor on a consistent basis throughout the internship program. Once you begin your internship, it is likely you will be integrated into staff meetings and check-ins, as well as opportunities to work directly with others on your team. You will meet the other members of your intern cohort during the Internship Orientation on May 8th and 9th (Wednesday & Thursday).
Yes, all ITS staff have access to a plethora of training materials outside of what you will already be provided on behalf of the program and your supervisor. You will have access to materials on LinkedIn Learning and Coursera. Plan to talk with your mentor about what you want to learn, and they will be happy to guide you to resources. We also encourage interns to take on a role in a cohort project that will challenge you to learn new skills that you may not know already. Additionally, you are welcome to attend Community of Practice meetings that align with your interests!
Opportunities for hiring are dependent on the needs within ITS or the Michigan IT community. If you are an upcoming or recent graduate, be sure to talk with your supervisor, mentor, and other staff in ITS about available openings and your interests. There may also be times in which temporary or student employee opportunities are available. Use this time as an opportunity to network!
The Internship Program provides robust professional development. You will attend seminars weekly Tuesdays and Thursdays from 10 a.m. to noon throughout the course of the summer, in-person at a specified location you will know in advance. Some of the speakers will include:
- Executives from ITS/Michigan IT to share their leadership experiences.
- Learner’s series presentations to introduce and explore concepts and techniques related to the IT field.
- Diversity, equity, and inclusion workshops.
- Whatever else you are interested in! Please let us know as we develop the calendar if there are topics you would like to learn more about.
We want to set you up for success in your internship experience as well as your academic program. If you are interested in taking classes, please let us know by reaching out to us at [email protected] so we can best determine what is possible for you.
Yes! Talk to your supervisor for approval first, and then let the ITS Internship Program planning team know when you’ll be out of the office. We will always support these requests.
Each day will look different for you throughout the program. You can expect to collaborate often with your supervisor and team about the departmental projects you are working on. Some teams meet daily in a stand-up format to share updates. In addition, you will meet with your mentor weekly. Other meetings may include Internship Program professional development, cohort project meetings and work time, social events, etc.
Talk to your supervisor early on about strategies surrounding time management. The Internship Program will provide some additional support in this area as well.
While ITS is not responsible for your living expenses or commute to/from Ann Arbor, we can suggest using the Off-Campus Housing website as a place to start.

Networking
- Being in ITS means that you’re part of our team now. If there’s any field that is of interest, let our team know or search it up in MCommunity and schedule a meeting with someone who can answer your curiosity!
- Within ITS, we have groups called Communities of Practice (CoPs) where like-minded IT professionals share information around specific topics such as “Women in IT”. Interns are welcomed to join!
- Slack has many channels for communities with different interests. A recent example is our #social-ai-chat channel where people post fun AI news and memes. Make sure to search in channels > manage > browse channels!
